Have you been searching for information on the best way to rescue a marriage, but can't appear to find anything further than fuzzy suggestions about learning communication skills, not criticizing, forgiving each other? Well, sure, those tips are wonderful, but there is a good deal you can try now to help make things far better. Although many of these measures for how to rescue a marriage take some time, they're all things you can begin carrying out right away.

1. Take a cooling off phase!
Regardless of whether your significant other has just told you they want a divorce or you've been speaking about it for quite a while, a cooling off period is going to do both of you some good. Take about a week to get away from each other and get together your emotions. This is not the time to make a laundry list of your "future ex's" issues if you really want to save marriage! Rather, concentrate on recalling the reasons why you fell deeply in love with your spouse to begin with and think through a few peaceful, respectful approaches to address the problems when you see each other once more.

2. Work on your personal challenges!
Of course, you've got issues, too. Sorry. And these aren't just problems between the two of you, but issues related to any kind of emotional baggage you brought into the marriage, too. In the event that you're having a cool down timeframe, that's a great time to work on these problems, although you shouldn't expect to sort out any serious problems in such a short space of time.Keep in mind, as well, that you have to be careful about assigning fault, particularly when your spouse has been violent or verbally abusive. While many trained counselors who realize how to save a marriage will remind you that it "takes two to tango," don't begin thinking you "made" your partner behave in certain manner.

3. Sort out conflicts!
If you've already taken your cooling off time frame and given some serious thought to the way you could be adding to the conflict, put aside several continuous hours to talk things over. In the event it seems like you always end up in shouting matches each time you are trying to work things out, you might want to carry this out inside a marriage counselor's office. A unbiased third party experienced with how to save a marriage can really help keep matters sane so you can make some genuine improvement. You have to make the effort if you really want to save marriage!

4. Spend quality time together with each other!
Not shelling out adequate quality time with each other is often what starts marriage problems in the first place. Subsequently once the relationship is really on the rocks, you spend more and more time apart. Luckily, it's an easy pattern to reverse. Find something you both enjoy executing, so long as you can talk to each other while doing it, and schedule a period for the activity at least twice per week.

5. Have Patience!
Most genuinely useful advice on, "how to save a marriage" won't present you with rapid solutions that you can get done in one day, but a great deal will give you tactics you can at the very least take a look at straight away. Whether you think that you require a short break from your companion to ease tensions or maybe you just need to give attention to each other a little bit more to prevent things from really deteriorating, there's always something you can do today to begin in the appropriate course.

Moving From a Romantic Twosome to a Solid Stepcouple and Stepfamily - Article 3

Tuesday, July 2, 2013

ARTICLE THREE:
BARGAINING AND DEPRESSION

How Can I Get Relief or Feel Better?

We’re continuing the series on the range of emotions and behaviors stepcouples struggle with as they adjust from a romantic twosome to solid stepcouple and stepfamily. The next stage is BARGAINING - seeking ways to escape or looking for the cure.

You must be realizing by now and feeling assured that you’re not alone in this adjustment process. That doesn’t diminish the power of your feelings – fear, anger, jealousy, and even desperation at times. You still love your spouse but that’s not the problem. The problem is that your idyllic relationship is heading downhill fast, due to the tugs and pulls of the kids, the exes, busy schedules, to say nothing of today’s scary economic news. Consciously or unconsciously, you think of ways of how to get through this and save your marriage. You’re grasping at hope and maybe a little magic.

This brings up vivid memories. I remember lying in bed at night dreaming up ways to get relief from our two sets of kids, who we had 24/7. I thought maybe our exes could take them more often, which I knew was impossible. Maybe I could find after school programs and camps for our 5 kids, somewhat feasible, but not very. At the end of my rope, I thought maybe a boarding school would work. Isn’t there someplace I can get relief? I owned the pity potÂ…that’s for sure. These feelings were particularly bad after arguments with the kids or with my husband about the kids.

I amused myself during those long sleepless nights planning my husband’s and my next getaway during the rare window when the kids weren’t with us. Those times together were wonderful, but we always had to come home to guess what - same old, same old.

I thought of running away or getting a job outside the house, but I needed to stay at home and take care of the kids! I was trapped.

The pressure was building and taking its toll on our romantic relationship. What happened to that glow? We’d find ourselves being negative and sarcastic with each other, openly fighting, or dishing out the silent treatment. The topic was always the same - THE KIDS. He’d side with his kids, and I’d side with mine. We were not being good models for blending a family.

Bargaining wasn’t working, so I slipped into DEPRESSION. I FELT LIKE A FAILURE. I wasn’t keeping my promises to cherish and care for the kids. I felt sad and angry a lot. I was drinking a little too much wine at night. The kids were seeking attention in numerous negative ways. No one was happy. It felt like we were at the bottom of a hole struggling to claw our way out.

Then one day after complaining to a friend, she brought it to my attention. She asked “What did you expect?” She went on to say “You married a man with kids. He’s going to love and protect his kids, no matter what! And furthermore, be glad that he’s a loving dad”. She nailed me! I asked her “BUT WHAT ABOUT ME?” She didn’t answer.

That did it! I got it that it wasn’t about me. I was supposed to be the adult, but I certainly wasn’t acting or feeling like one. I needed to grow up and change my attitude.

That was my first step toward adjustment and acceptance.

The final two articles in this series will be focusing specifically on how stepcouples can grow together and raise healthy children - his, hers, and theirs in a blended family. If done with love, respect and mutual support, I can’t think of anything more ROMANTIC! Can you?

Emotional Infidelity: A KEY Tactic to Save the Marriage

| | | Comments: (0)

Hearing that your cheating spouse is “in love” with someone else is devastating. I hear often, “I can handle her having sex with someone else. I think I can live with that. But, for her to give herself emotionally and “love” someone elseÂ…man, that is hard.” (Feel free to substitute the word he for she in this article.)

What can you specifically do to increase the odds of saving the marriage?

So often the offended spouse reacts with intense feelings and pulls out all stops to “win her back.”

He applies pressure. Begs. Cajoles. Makes promises. Gets in her face. Sends flowers. Arranges for dates. Talks to her family and friends. Calls her on the phone. Asks questionsÂ… daily, sometimes hourly. He is on her like a fly on doo-doo.

It doesn’t work. Why? Well, for one reason she has found all the stimulation and excitement she supposedly needs in her new found “love.”

At a deeper level this is confusing enough for the cheating husband or cheating wife. Any additional input will be overwhelming and she is liable to close the door on the marriage even further. Plus, she is really looking for some stability, some solid centered core that will hold her firm when the wind of drama entices her and blows around her.

If you bombard her with your neediness, you are certainly not the person who can help her in ways she really seeks.

She also is liable to create a polarity and begin comparing you to him. With your neediness dripping all over you, you don’t stand a very good chance of coming out on top. Sorry!

Here’s a tactic that helps solve the dilemma and gives you a greater chance of saving the marriage. It’s called “back off!”

Stop pressing. Slow down the pace. Be silent – most of the time. Stop making requests. Stop asking questions. Stop trying to wiggle out some assurance. Stop being a pain!

Remember, this “in love” state will fade. You need to have the confidence that it will. You need patience. The relationship will run its course.

She needs the space. She needs some quiet moments to truly hear herself and face the emptiness within. There will be a voice within her that says, “This will not last. Is this what I really want? At some time I must live in the real world. Where is this taking me? Is this where I really want to go? Why am I so dependent on him? Why do I feel this empty pit in my stomach when I’m not with him? What does this say about me?”

This is her opportunity to learn about TRUE love. Don’t get in her way.

I know. I know. This is easier said than done. But, you must do it. It is vitally important that you learn to quiet yourself, control yourself and keep on the straight and narrow path.

At this point with those I coach, I teach them a skill called "charging neutral" to help "back off." Use that skill. This will take some effort. It might take some coaching or therapy. It most likely will demand that you get to know yourself better, that you gain more confidence in you – apart from what she does with him – that you build a strong foundation under yourself that can weather any storm.

This is your opportunity to grow to another level.

Oh, by the way. She will notice! AndÂ….she might like it.

Backing off does not mean that you don’t have anything to do with her. Quite the contrary. You want to maintain your contact with her, but it will be QUALITY contact. It will be contact that does honor to you, confronts her with the reality of her decisions and works toward resolution for the marriage.

Summary: Less often means more when facing emotional infidelity. Learning a specific skill such as "backing off" enhances one's chance to save the marriage.

Are You Thinking of Leaving Or Ending Your Marriage?

| | | Comments: (0)

Sometimes when we fantasize about leaving or ending our marriage, it's not because we're fighting with our spouse, or because we're angry, or because we don't like or love them... It's often simply because we feel bored and don't feel the spark that we felt any more.

Maybe you're feeling that life with your spouse has become dull and routine, rather than interesting and engaging.

If this is the case, rest assured you are definitely not alone! The reality is that most marriages will feel stale and lifeless at times and that's quite normal.

As a Psychotherapist in Private Practice I spend a lot of time helping people work through these feelings and find new hope and new energy in their relationships.

So what do you do when you feel bored in your marriage or when you're deciding whether to leave or end your marriage, or to save your marriage?

First, know that "all is not lost"! There is, indeed, hope for you to feel invigorated, excited and alive in your relationship again. And, contrary to the thoughts you might be having as you're reading this, it's not going to take too much hard work, just a bit of a change in your focus and a willingness to go outside your usual comfort zone.

In fact, probably the hardest part of saving your marriage is making a decision that you're ready to take the action steps that will do just that, despite feeling that you're not (yet) getting what you need...

Step 1: Decide that for the next 3 to 6 months you're going to do all that you can do to save your marriage (despite your fears).

This is a small step, but an important one. If you've been considering leaving your marriage at all, then chances are that you've had one foot out of the marriage and one foot in the marriage for a little while now.

Now is a time to decide that you are willing and committed to investing 3 to 6 months from today to save your marriage. Tell yourself...

"For the next 6 months, I'm going to focus on doing everything I can to save my marriage... I'm going to commit to this despite my fear that it won't change and despite my fear that my spouse isn't interested in saving our marriage!"

Step 2: Do the things that you can do to reignite the spark and rebuild your relationship. Save your marriage.

There are many things that you can do to turn your relationship around. Some you can start with are:

Re-invest energy into the relationship side of the marriage

When you met your spouse, there were probably things that you enjoyed sharing and doing together that made you feel connected and close to each other. These may have been outings, dates, events, activities, etc. Do you still do those together?

Maybe it's time to think about having "date nights". These are times that you specifically schedule into your diary where you spend time together "dating each other" again. Going out to a restaurant or film or picnic/walk together and actually consciously talking about each other and what you want. Often couples end up talking about finances, kids, extended families, pets, etc. While this is important, talking about each other's needs is just as important and helps you re-invest energy into your relationship and save your marriage.

Listen to each other with fresh ears

Often we have developed an expectation of what each other will say, and so we're so busy "knowing what they'll say" that we don't delve in and ask each other what they need or how they feel. I'm not saying that you need to become their therapist (That's my job). I'm simply saying that if you actually really listen to what your partner is saying with 100% attention, you might hear something that makes them more interesting.

Ask more questions

When we "know" someone, we stop asking them questions and trying to understand them. Did you know that the simple act of asking questions and really listening to the answer can have your spouse (and I'm guessing you too) start to feel really engaged and connected again? Try it, you might be surprised at how well it works.

Create shared goals and visions that don't necessarily include finances

Often the mere act of living as a joint unit can leave us making only goals that are about getting by week-to-week, or achieving financial goals. How about making some goals together, really spending the time together to talk about what your dreams and visions are, and setting some extraordinary and fun goals together?

And many more...

Naturally there are many other things you can do to reignite the spark in your relationship. But starting with these few can be a great way to really start to change the dynamic of your marriage and help you start to save your marriage today!
